About

Carlos Ribeiro was born in Almada where he lives and works. Studied ceramics at Escola de Arte A Base and ArCo. Studied Philosophy, Aesthetics, History of Art, Performance, in places such as ArCo, MArt, Nextart, Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, Centro Cultural de Belém, Gulbenkian, Culturgest, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, among others. Until 2017, he privileged the use of found materials, exploring their materiality but also their formal, aesthetic and ethnographic dimension and the transformation that occurs in the decontextualization/recontextualization mechanism during the creative process.

A multidisciplinary artist, he works in the areas of installation, video and performance, essentially on themes such as violence, politics and ecology.

In 2017 he rediscovered ceramics. Since then, he has developed work that seeks to explore new materialities and languages, insisting on the profound need to understand clay in its historical and artistic context, simultaneously seeking a poetics that results from the relationship born with the material from the work in the studio. In this process, it seeks to highlight the intrinsic characteristics of clay by exploring the different textures and colors of this telluric material.

He is currently investigating the connections between architecture and geometry in the production of sculptural objects and installations, through a serial process, which seeks in the intrinsic formal relationships and with the space where they are installed, the establishment of circumstances of balance and harmony that can trigger emotional experiences in the viewer.

He is coordinator and teacher in the Ceramics Department at the A Base art school. He is co-creator of the artistic and cultural intervention project O Porco Voador where he is coordinator and curator of the contemporary ceramics exhibition project Amplitude. Develops an interview project that seeks to reveal the lives and work of Portuguese artists who work with ceramics. He was responsible for the curation and programming of Fábrica de Braço de Prata in 2018, director of the Associação de Artistas Plásticos do Barreiro, Artesfera, in the period 2014/16, member of the social organs of F4-Associação Imagem e Cultura between 2011 and 2016 and collaborator of the IMAGINARTE ALMADA project, 2012/16. Also noteworthy is his presence as a professor of Video Editing at Universidade Sénior de Almada between 2012 and 2019. He participated as a contributor to NON magazine in 2002.

His work is represented in several institutional and private collections, including the Figueiredo Ribeiro collection.
